# How much ancillary revenue is booking volume worth?

Calculate what ancillary revenue a booking volume could produce, using your own inputs and real seat-count ranges from published airline cabin layouts.

The useful version of an [ancillary revenue](/glossary/ancillary-revenue) sum
starts by naming what the volume counts. Confirmed reservations, passengers,
segments, and departures are not interchangeable. A rate applied to the wrong
one can produce immaculate arithmetic and a commercially useless answer.

Start with confirmed passenger bookings when you have them: passengers multiplied by your own attach rate and value per sale. If volume starts as departures, first use the actual cabin configuration and your own occupied-seat share. Published layouts span 33 to 615 seats, so aircraft type alone is not a safe passenger denominator.

The passenger capacity comes from the published [cabin layouts](/glossary/cabin-layout),
so the part most fleet-level models guess is visible and traceable.

## How many passengers can one departure mean?

The published corpus contains 454 publishable layouts with a seat count, carrying 108,139 seats in total. A layout runs from 33 to 615 seats. The median is 226 seats and the mean is 238.2 seats.

The gap is not explained by long haul against short haul alone. A
[narrowbody](/glossary/narrowbody) and a [widebody](/glossary/widebody) each
cover a wide band, while regional aircraft and turboprops have their own
distinct ranges.

Narrowbody has 190 layouts from 102 to 240 seats with a median of 180 seats. Widebody has 236 layouts from 161 to 615 seats with a median of 297 seats. Regional has 18 layouts from 73 to 136 seats. Turboprop has 10 layouts from 33 to 74 seats.

A fleet label is not a passenger count. Even before the analysis reaches a named aircraft type, the category ranges show why the denominator has to come from the configuration assigned to the departure.

For a scheduled departure, seats are still capacity rather than passengers.
Apply your own observed [load factor](/glossary/load-factor), or another
explicit occupied-seat assumption, after selecting the cabin configuration.
Do not hide that input inside a label such as expected passengers.

## How do you turn departure volume into ancillary revenue?

The sum has a strict order: departure volume, seats in the assigned
configuration, occupied passenger volume, attached sales, then value. The
[attach rate](/glossary/attach-rate) has to use passengers as its denominator
in this example because the product decision is being modelled per passenger.

**Caution:** **Reader inputs chosen only for legibility.** This worked scenario uses 100 departures, an occupied-seat share of 50%, a 10% reader-owned attach assumption, and $20 gross value per sale. These are arbitrary round placeholders. They describe no operator or market, and the reader should replace all of them with their own values.

The arbitrary reader inputs produce $21,200 from the 212-seat configuration and $47,200 from the 472-seat configuration. The rate and price do not change. Only the measured passenger denominator changes.

If the source system already gives confirmed passengers, begin with that count
and skip the capacity and occupied-seat steps. If it gives confirmed
reservations, multiply by your own observed passengers per reservation first.
The calculation should never convert a known passenger count back through an
aircraft estimate.

The final multiplication can use gross sale value, net revenue, or margin, but
the label must say which. That choice does not change the passenger arithmetic.
It changes what the last line is allowed to mean.

## How far can seat count move within one aircraft type?

Aircraft type sounds like a precise denominator because it names a precise
machine. It does not name the seats installed inside that machine. The widest
same-type spreads in the published corpus make that distinction measurable.

A per-passenger assumption applied to a Boeing 777-300ER departure spans a factor of 2.2 between the 212-seat configuration flown by All Nippon Airways and the 472-seat configuration flown by Air France. Sizing ancillary revenue from a fleet count without the actual configurations puts an error into the model before the first rate or price is applied.

This is why configuration belongs beside schedule and fleet data in a
commercial model. Fleet counts say what can operate. Cabin layouts say how many
passengers one operation can carry. Only the latter is a usable denominator

## What should a distribution lead replace before using this sum?

Replace every non-corpus input with a value that can be defended inside your
own reporting. Departure volume should match the period being planned.
Occupied-seat share should match the route and season. The attach assumption
should keep the same denominator and eligibility rule as the metric you will
later report. Value per sale should match the gross, net, or margin view the
decision needs.

1. **Fix the volume definition**

   State whether the source count is reservations, passengers, segments, or departures before applying any multiplication.

2. **Resolve the operating configuration**

   Use the cabin layout assigned to the departure. An aircraft family or fleet total is not a substitute for its seat count.

3. **Write every commercial assumption beside the sum**

   Keep occupied-seat share, attach logic, eligibility, and value per sale visible so finance can replace or challenge each input.

4. **Run a range before calling it a plan**

   Change one reader-owned input at a time. The spread shows which assumption controls the result and where better evidence is worth collecting.

The result is a scenario until observed performance replaces the assumptions.
That is useful. A scenario with visible inputs can be challenged, rerun, and
reconciled. A single confident total with a hidden denominator cannot.
